A2PRODUCTION-STRING ALONG

evaluation question number 1

Our film, string along is a film based a round a certain ancient Chinese concept. This was the foundation of our film however during the pre-production process we padded out this concept by gaining other ideas from current, real media products, such as films, TV shows and the general public.

String long is a romantic drama film which basically is a fusion of both the genres together
To make sure this came through we had to follow certain codes and conventions, which effected things like our choice of setting, lighting and other things like camera shots.

Our choices of location conformed to current romantic comedies, and dramas and other films which involve our themes of love lies and cheating. Films such as unfaithful and TV shows such as Hollyoaks inspired our location, after much talk about the relationship between our characters.
Our film takes place in a house, most shots where shot in either a bedroom, or the living room, everything was house based, this however excludes out abstract shots which were shot on a set.

The house, in itself is quiet a closed setting, people do whatever they want in the comfort of their own home as it is seen as such a private place The theme of our film also involves certain actions of intimacy, dinners, and serious conversations, which are usually, carried out in household settings. However although our film involves the main theme of cheating we wanted to establish this, but not in an abrupt manner, meaning we didn't want our film to be of too much of a sexual nature because the relationship between these characters is quiet complex, and based on several other things and we didn't want sex to over shadow them. This is why a majority of our scenes are based in the living area of our main character’s home, and our abstract shots. Although we do have shots based in a bedroom these scenes are more romantic, soft and gentle, with several actions to show that the characters are intimate. W got this softer idea of intimacy, from the film 500 days of summer, where love and intimacy is represented in a gentle manner, which we decided to take on board for certain parts of our film, however we challenged this by not making this the main focus as unlike that story line our film isn’t about true love between two people.

Our film also follows specific codes and conventions of other romantic dramas, throughout the kind of lighting and camera shots we have used throughout. The lighting in our film is never too bright, or too dark, It is quiet cosy lighting which sets the mood and the theme we tried to portray the theme of lust and cheating, if we look at the films such as unfaithful the low key lighting in many of the bedroom scenes sets a mood which would be expected in affairs. Camera shots we decided to use were also inspired by, other current media products, from research we found out and saw that most romantic dramas have a lot of close ups of things like facial expressions, which are key in our film genre as well as type of film (silent film), so also due to silence of the film we need to focus on facial expressions through the use of close ups as this was our main communication tool, since dialogue was taken away. Similarly done in other silent films, especially romance based ones such as 7 Chances 1925

Although we have aimed to follow some of the key codes and conventions of romantic dramas, we have also developed things and challenged certain aspects.
For example, the romantic dramas which I have mentioned are based in a certain world, they stick to this world throughout the film our film however incorporates two worlds. The abstract and the reality. Originally we intended to have the shots very separate but then came to the conclusion that our film would look more interesting if we mixed them, by mixing I mean, having shots of reality followed by shots of the abstract world throughout the film. In doing so we
Introduce two different worlds in our film, adding an unusual twist to our film as well as its genre. Black swan is an abstract film which has helped us think of things to include and how to execute certain things, the fall was also a huge inspiration, with ideas on cinematography and clever things such as graphic matching which we did in one of our scenes, whilst our character blows out a match, which as the scene fades turn to fraying thread.

For characters much research and planning took place. We looked at many characters with similar motives. Characters such as the character of Lena from broken embraces, the character of Mercedes from, hollyoaks, Summer from 500 days of summer, Naomi Clark from 90210, and Connie summer from unfaithful each character here is involved in some sort of relation ship and executes there actions in different ways, they all had traits which we thought if put together would make a great character, and Have been very interesting to watch, and therefore had a huge contribution to forming our main character Delilah.

During this process we had to follow the characteristics of a typical cheating woman, Characters I have researched are Mercedes from TV show hollyoaks who's character is quiet similar to Delilah’s for example both women are portrayed as seductive and quiet devious. However we have challenged this code, by bringing traits form each, of the characters above, by making her caring as well as, selfish, and remorseful as well as living for the moment.

The sex of the characters in our film is another way which we have conformed to current media products. Most romantic films consist of the opposite sexes coming together sharing encounters which go wrong and get resolved or sometimes don't. Here in string along we have done the same by having female and male characters, A typical code, present in classic films as well as current ones, with the exception of films and TV shows with a particular motive or message about same sex relationships like the relationship between the character if said and Christian and Eastenders..

In films which portray the theme of cheating, the person being cheated on is always unaware, until something happens which causes them to find out. This was done for both the male characters they are both unaware which is kind of the basic idea of cheating. The main difference in characters is also something which we conformed to. In my research I realised that, the two men or two women, about cheating each man/woman is very different from the other. The example of the love triangle in hollyoaks shows this; where one is more masculine and protective but less loving than the other. Same how James character in our film is very playful/not too serious, whereas David is very classic romantic type not too much into fun and games.

The main way in which we challenged current media products regarding characters is by having a woman as the cheater instead of the male, which is typical of many media products.
Also we focus more on the life of the cheater and her world rather than those being cheated on which other films do the complete opposite, we did this because we felt that current media films hardly focus on that perspective and see the cheater as the offender an evil person, however by looking at the affairs from the cheaters perspective we can see the different kind of motives behind her act, which are not stereotypical. For example we may discover sadness rather than evil within the cheater.

Our narrative was very simple- a cheating woman who gets caught in the end. Current films involving the themes of cheating, are the same very rarely does the cheater not get caught.
We also conformed to current media products, because many romantic dramas have a point of chaos. A turning point which in our film is the confrontation between Delilah and the men.
This climax point in our film was very important to us to incorporate as it is what triggers her downfall. The downfall of the deviant character is also another way which our group has conformed to current media products.

We challenged the narrative point of current films, by having a concept which we build upon rather than just starting from scratch. The red strings of fate is an ideology which has not been seen in any of the current media products, although this concept was developed to fit in with genre of our film it is still what sets it apart from the rest.
We chose to do this because; we did not want our film to just be like other typical romantic dramas. Certain films sometimes base their stories of old stories or concepts however these are always followed through like film adaptations of Cinderella or red ridding hood, our film however, defies the concept, by firstly having our character delilah tied to both men (as the original idea is that you are tied to your soul mate) and secondly because the strings break in the end, when the original Idea is that the strings never break no matter how astray you go.

Mis en scene was extremely important during filming, as our film is very visual base. We looked a lot into, the typical props we would find in romantic dramas, or in the rooms of other devious characters. Props such as candles, and wine during the dinner scene, follow the style of romantic dramas. The wine and dine mood is present in a majority of those films. Delilahs make up was inspired by geisha’s of ancient Chinese history, as the red has many meanings such as lust heat, urgency, enemy as well as romance. These are all things which make up our character and our film, so we incorporated it in our film as much possible form the thread to the make up.

We challenged this at the same time with her hair. Because Delilahs costume and make up made her look like the devious character we were aiming for. At the same time though her character is not just based on devious behaviour, which is why we had her hair in curls to bring a little bit of innocence to her character. Representing vulnerability which is clear near the end. We got this idea form pictures of little girls with this hairstyle.

We also challenged current media products, by giving specific and very important key meanings to everything to our props, because our film is kind of abstract a swell, most romantic dramas focus on dialogue, so did not really have very meaningful props, other silent romantic based movies, showed things through their facial expressions, (we tried to avoid this abit so our film would not seem comical) And we showed things through our props

evaluation question number 4

New technology was used during many processes of our film production. During preproduction the main thing I used for research was the internet. This helped me carry out all the research I needed to do, such as character research and general research into other films. The website most useful to me where Google, IMDB and YouTube.

For example Google helped me for general searches of course because it is a very popular search engine. With Google I was transferred to all the sites I needed to look at and gained pictures, which helped me throughout the preproduction process, such as pictures of story boards, and characters, which helped us build our own. I did not really have any limitations with this as it provided me with all the information I needed most of the time, but sometimes if I didn't know the name of a specific thing I wanted research and relied on Google, the outcome wasn't always in my interest, meaning there were times when I needed to be specific even when I couldn’t be however I did find things to replace those. For example, when researching different story telling techniques, I didn’t know the name of a specific one, but whilst searching for it, Google showed me alternatives.
YouTube
was also very helpful because it helped me to get actual visual footage which helped a lot with things like getting ideas, making comparisons, and just looking into other films.

YouTube helped us overcome the limitations we had with still things like pictures and text. Because our film would be a moving picture looking at other moving pictures was very helpful, the ones we looked at, were ways to open our opening sequences, this varied from current opening sequences as well as TV show openings, which all contributed to our ideas. We looked at opening titles for shows such as seven day, a channel four documentary which had a very interesting opening sequence; we looked at opening sequences for films like Dexter and true blood which kept the themes of the show very clear in their sequence. We also looked at characters in action, characters like Naomi Clark, and Mercedes, As well as Lena from broken embraces which where helpful to watch, in action in clips, this was good for our character to look at but also came in handy for us the directors when directing our character during filming, we were able to look back at Those clips and directed them, so they would portray a certain message same way those clips did.

IMDB was used during research too; this was because it is a film based site and so went in much more depth regarding film information in comparison to other pages like Wikipedia. Especially for small production films which don't have that much recognition yet. For example a Loose Canons was a film which I had some trouble researching into, but IMDB made it possible for me to gain the information I needed. This form of technology not only helped for the research for our film but also for, research into film magazine and posters for our ancillary tasks because I was able to research different types of film magazines around and get information on each, and find the best one for my film. I was able to compare print as well as, web pages and the differences and similarities in their layout ect.. And look into various, film posters some current and very classic ones as well for comparison. For our planning process, such as the production of our scripts, our story boards, our call sheets, and all our other preproduction items which would help us create our film. The main form of new technology used, was the scanner. This was extremly helpfull. Especially for things which we had drawn and when gathering ideas for our story board many of us drew many different things. Personally drawing was much easier to do on paper rather than on a computer software, so with the scanner we were able to draw, and scan in our story boards and other drawn up items, or even things which we researched such as print film magazines, so they could be presented on our blogs. Scanning was very helpful, however its one limitation was that sometimes text or little detail was unclear; some things did not show up, or things originally meant to be presented on one page, ended up in two because of the limited scanning space on the scanner.
This is another way in which the use of new technology was present in the overall production processes of our film.

The actual production/ filming of our film was carried out with a canon hxa1 Camera, this is a high definition camera with many functions to alter the look of the shot.

In our story board we have a few shots which are blurred or have certain effects which can be achieved on, on the camera, so our aim was to, create these effects while shooting. However our group came to the decision that it would be much better to add the effects in after during post production, this made the camera much easier to manage and was a safer option.

So instead we used the camera in a standard manner, we used the zooming dials near the lens of the camera, and experimented with the focus of the camera to try and get different interesting shots. This is present in the daydream sequence, we shot this using the blurring function, on the camera and we shot it again normally without any effects, we used the blur here to emphasis the daydream essence.

One thing which we insisted on doing was having the sound equipment on set even though it was a silent film, I insisted upon this especially due to past mistakes where sound equipment was not on set, resulting to lack of sound. Even though that was the aim of our film, we felt that sound still needed to be recorded just incase we picked up anything which could be used effectively in our film, this however did not happen.
We also used a digital camera on set, to take pictures of the set and characters after certain shots to make sure, that they looked the same in the next ones. For example one of the scenes in our film takes place in the, living room with food and other items placed on the table, so the pictures helped us set everything back in its exact place, the next day.

Similar to the role of a director of photography. This also allowed us to remember the placement characters and made the role of person in charge of continuity much easier and manageable, especially since we had 3 cast members and 5 crew members, things could sometimes get a little bit confusing. These where the main forms of new technology used during the filming process.

During the editing process the software we used to edit our films, was Adobe Premier Pro, a film editing software. With this software we digitised our rushes from our camera straight on our computer, when this was done we kept cutting down our shots to a satisfactory length and kept going back to it, all our work was saved on a LaCie drive another form of helpful new technology we used. This acted a bit USB for us, it’s a drive which allowed us to store as many files as we needed to due to its high disk space, and go back to it when needed.

The film editing software Was useful in the sense that, it allowed us to included almost all of our desired effects in our film visually wise, such as "cross fades" and "dip to blacks", "dip to white" "blurs" on screen to create our daydream sequence. I say almost however because, some of the things we aimed to do where not achievable, for example bleaching out all colours apart from the red, throughout the film. We attempted this by changing the opacity of certain shots, and picking out a certain colour to be identified by the software, which in this case would have been red. However this looked very good but only work well with only one shot in our film. The film editing software as a whole also had its limitations, with the constant crashing and sometimes being unable to recognise files which meant we had to save our work regularly, to make sure nothing was lost. The same software was used for our titles. We originally planned to create something based around the string. This would however have meant that we would need to animate our string which we were not able to do on that software, due to its limited amount of things which can be done with tittles.

When our film was finally edited and ready to play out the next step was the distribution elements like film posters and magazines and there production.
My film magazine was the first thing I produced and, this was created on Microsoft publisher, I used publisher because it allowed me to have more freedom regarding the placement of my text, and the layout, and also because its layout looks like a magazine page. However I also copied and pasted certain things unto word due to the fact that there I was able to act finishing touches in my font, and I did nit want the border lines of my magazine page to show up like they would do on publisher.
For my film poster, the two main software’s I used were paint and Microsoft publisher. I used Microsoft publisher, instead of more recognised software’s such as Photoshop because although they have more to offer, I felt as if Microsoft publisher was much easier to use for me as I felt comfortable with this software more than others, and believed I could use it effectively to its full potential.

The LaCie drive was also used so I could get screen grabs of, the film and transfer them to another computer. When this was done I pasted my pictures to paint and edited them, as desired for example, bleaching them and colouring in. Certain areas, for example I did this in my 3rd film poster, by making the surroundings black and white and important things like the woman’s lips and the string remain red. I did little things like this so our concepts and themes would show through. Paint was good for this as I was able to fill in those areas successfully by zooming in and doing so precisely and carefully. When I did all this, I then pasted them back on Microsoft publisher and laid them out to my desire which was extremely easy to do using this software.

The most commonly used form of new technology however was our blogs. Our blogs acted as our journals here we stored every single bit of research, planning and all the things we needed for our film. In the beginning I didn’t realise how helpful and vital it would be but it proved to be. We used to blog to also present work such as treatments to present to classmates and our teacher, as well as using it to present videos which all helped towards our film,
These are all the ways in which I used new technology for the production of our film.

evaluation question number 2

After the production we knew the next step was advertising. In order to do so and successfully, we produced film posters as well as film reviews, tools to attract our target audience, making them want to watch the film. However how does a poster and a film review work together with a film as a whole package and how effectively do they work together?

To make sure that our ancillary projects as well as our main task worked together I had to keep a lot of things in consideration, such as themes and concepts which needed to be seen in all 3 takes to show they all formed one product.

The first thing I started with was the production of my film poster I researched into current poster campaigns which have proven to be successful as they have gained great recognition. Film poster campaigns such as Harry potter and the deathly hallows have given me many ideas for the construction of my poster as well as my campaign as the films film campaign was very interesting. Film poster campaigns exist not only to promote the film but also promote the genre the themes and the characters involved. Harry potters film campaign had a variety of film posters with different characters in each poster; this is a good way to attract a wide range of audiences as different characters have different fan bases, meaning some characters may influence more people to watch a film than others. This was one of the main reason I decided to do more than one poster however the differences in the posters is more based on the different looks it has compared to different characters.

My first poster consists of our main character Delilah, in the centre of the page, her picture however is bleached out, so we can mainly see a white silhouette which is complemented by a black background and red and white fonts around the poster. I decided to have our character in that place because she is the main attraction of film she is the focus. However I bleached out her picture to create more of a sense of mystery which is present in the film during the build up scenes before the big confrontation.
The main thing I was attempting to do when I was producing my film posters was to try and bring the world of the film on a page however to this in 3 different ways, so that my film poster campaign consisted of 3 posters which each told a bit of the story of my film.

In my first poster the use of colours and items are all things from the film which I brought into my poster. For example the use of the colour red is the main focus throughout out film, due to the mainly different representations it has, this is why this colour is present in all 3 of my film posters. In the first poster this colour is shown through the colour of the string and certain tittles, such as names and film information. The string in the film is also a very important element which I brought in my poster through the style of witting for the title of the film and, the image of the string. The character’s body language is very plain and kind of stiff, to show that she doesn’t really know what to do, which is the same body language
Present in the argument scenes of our film in the last few scenes.

My second poster focuses more on the things she does. The pictures used of Delilah whispering into one of the men’s ears, is a portrayal of the way in which she manipulates these men by, telling them everything they want to hear. Both characters here are in the foreground however more of Delilah’s face is shown in comparison to the other male, this shows that she is the main character and it is about her doing something to the other characters. This is what she does in our film. Once again I incorporated the theme of the strings through the style of writing on the poster.

My third film poster is inspired by other film posters for films such as Valentines Day, Looses Cannons, and he’s just not that into you. This style is very effective as it has allowed me to incorporate several key scenes of the film, in one poster. I chose this style as it allowed me to tell a little bit of the plot, without giving too much away. I tried to this in all my posters to create hype over the film, and word of mouth which is the cheapest and most effective form of promotion.

Overall I think that my film complements my film very effectively as they all contain elements of the film and portray the character the same way she is in the film. The same themes present in my posters are also present.
The next step for the promotion of our film was creating a film review. The main purpose of a film review is to answer the questions asked by audience after having seen a film poster, it also tells audiences from a critical point of views the high and low points of a film, and telling the audiences the genre of the film the kind of audiences it would Appeal through the constant references of similar films or previous work of the director they Basically tell us if a is even worth watching, all this is done however without explaining the whole film.

The film magazine I decided to write my review for was total film magazine. This decision was based on the fact that this is a well known film magazine, in England which has a lot of recognition; the most important reason however was because based on research I found out that this magazine also writes for low budget films from around the world. Films made in Countries where film is hard to get noticed, since our film is a small production I thought that this would be the best magazine to write for.

My film review is written in a style which fits the magazine and also targets our target audience of people of the ages of 15+ this is because I believe the themes in our film start to be experienced from that age, and the films elements are not so explicit to have a rating of 18 the language is also targeted at that audience, the kind of jokey attitude in the beginning of the review shows this. My film review just gives a basic overview of the film and talks about its main features, such as the fact that it is a silent film, the key themes it involves, and compliments the visual elements which are present throughout the film. Just like any other film review important film information such as running times, and directors is present. The picture used for the film review follows the house style of the film and the film posters. I picked this picture because it belongs to the abstract scene and kind of tells the main Idea of the film, with the woman character and her holding on to the strings on each hand. Overall I believe that both of my ancillary tasks compliment each other as well as my main task as they all share the same things which makes them look like one product. One campaign which promotes our film successfully.

evaluation question number 3

Audience feedback throughout the whole construction process of our film was very effective and useful.
Feedback was the only way we could get criticism for our film, from another point of view, because we knew our film so well it helped us see things that we maybe didn't see for example whether things worked or if they made sense, because overall the film wasn't for us but made for an audience and their point of view and feedback was vital.
Feedback, affected the ways my group worked from the very first stages of pre-production.

In the process of trying to come up with a story idea we had many difficulties, coming up with Ideas that were achievable, as many of our original ideas where good however were too complex for us to achieve for example, one of my original film ideas was the story of a woman with a personality disorder who has given birth, but is unable to spend anytime with her new born child because she is on watch. From feedback from others as well as members of my group I realised that this Idea would cause many problems, with location as there are many practical issues such as entry problems with filming in hospitals, even if we tried to set up a hospital set ourselves, our production values would be low and the film would not have looked that great. From this my group and I learnt to keep our ideas simple however execute them in an exciting way. This is how my group and I came up with the idea of the story of a cheating woman. This idea was then developed through the use of themes and concepts such as the red strings of fate.
After this we decided that our woman character would be tied to several men, round 5. The feedback given on this was that the amount of men was too much and we were jus complicating things for ourselves. After much thinking we realised that this was true, so we then cut the number of men down to two. Now that we had our main idea down we needed to write a treatment for our story Idea, to pitch to people and get their point of view of the story so far. Our first treatment received a lot of criticism which we took into consideration. Location was one of the issues, in our first pitch the location in where our woman character met up with these men was a little cafe which she took them to every single time. We were told that this location was kind of dull, and very casual for the kind of story we were going for. Character motivation was also quiet unclear, as there was no actual reason for why she is doing so, and if there was it not shown. Our main criticism was that the story was simple however too simple, and needed to be padded out, which meant it needs more elements to make it interesting. While creating our second treatment we kept all our criticisms from the previous one in mind, to overcome the problem of the dullness and simplicity of the story we, decided to have a little twist at the end, which was that our character became pregnant in the end of the story. When we pitched to our class we were praised on the improvement from the previous treatment however this version still needed work. We decided to fix the problem of character motivation, by making her motivation the lack of male attention from a young age as she didn't have a father, this was inspired by the character of Naomi Clark which we researched into. However to show this would mean introducing even more characters which was an issue we previously faced, so we thought that her background would seem clear if we put up pictures of her mother all around her room and mirrors. Feedback about that part was that this did not make sense to the audience, and they would have never pieced the idea of a missing father from those pictures. Also due to the picture of the mother they would expect the story to kind of revolve around her or have her show up, other feedback was that the twist was a good Idea but did not correlate with the kind of relationship she has with these men, as the location of the cafe is very dull and we don't really know that she is actually being sexual with these men. Meaning if we kept this idea we would need to change our location from the cafe to a house, as there is much more we can do in a house. However someone else said the idea of a house is a much better location than a cafe, for the same reasons but, that the idea of the pregancy was a little bit too much, making the story a little bit all over the place.

From this feedback we learnt that we needed to take more time and consideration in the elements of our ideas. This was the feedback which allowed us to come up with a final treatment which was given the approval.
We fixed our problems by having the whole film located in a house, making the character motive simply the want of constant attention, and we got rid of the pregnancy idea in the end as , it was a bit too much, because we didn’t want this film to be too sexually based.

The next step was writing a script, which was a task our group did separately in partneers this was so we could do two different things and pick the best Ideas out from each others work. Most of our feedback came from each other.
We picked out the best bits from each others scripts to then go on and, create our final script for our film. For example in mine and partners script the day dream sequences was, very soft and gentle with her laying with each of the men, with the faces constantly switching to establish that she is with two men. This was picked over the other pair whose idea of the day dream sequence was much more sexual, wit her kissing the mean around the house.

After the scripting process, we created our story boards; we made several drafts of this as because our group was so large everyone had different visions of the script, so we did this until everyone was content. The feedback we received from our script was that it tod the story however the shots were not that interesting, as they were too static. We took this on board and created more visually interesting shots, inspired from previous cinematography tasks, so instead of for example having a shot of woman character standing getting ready this would be shot through her mirror reflection.

For music, one of our team members researched into music he thought would compliment our film, when this was presented the feedback we received was that the acoustic sounds he found were too, smooth and calming, to go with our story, as they are the complete opposites, we were also told that the music was too ‘folky’ and the instruments used did not fit the style or genre of our film. Music which was intense was also however too intense for our film, which although has intense themes, it is not executed in that way. This is the feedback which we took on board and helped us throughout film research; we were then able to find music which fitted the style and genre of our film.
After we had our main preproduction bits ready, the next step was production which went quiet smoothly, thanks to the preparation for it.

During the editing process we received a lot of feedback, every single time we made someone watch our film.
These where mostly technical problems which we either did not notice or things which didn't look that great. For example our first draft of the film, was very simple, we received feedback that there is a fade to black moment during the transition of men during the day dream sequence which needed to be changed to a fade, as it was too abrupt. This is what we did. There was also an effect which was not constant in the daydream sequence which we had to fix and make it so as it did not look good. We originally wanted our abstract shots bleached out however highlighting the colour red, inspired by sin city, however this only worked for one scene as all the other scenes where completely bleached out due to the lighting, in that scene, we still kept it this way however but through feedback we were told it may jus be better to scrap the effect and just leave the abstract shots as they are, as if we did use the effect the image came out black and white ruining the theme of red. Music transition was our main concern in the editing process, as we were constantly told it needed to be a lot smoother. We fixed this problem by modifying sound levels to make the transitions smoother. Feedback was also very useful in the final touches stage of our film, as from this we decided to start off with an abstract shot, which looked so much better than the mundane opening we originally had. So as you can see feedback had been our backbone throughout every single process you can think off, it has allowed for a product which pleases our target audience which is what its all about. As well as helping us overcome and fix problems feedback has also helped us see things in a positive light, our main example of this, was our tittles, as leader of titles research I originally wanted the tittles to follow the theme of the string, so I looked into different ways this could be achieved, like CGI animation or stop motion animation. The stop motion animation was good but did not look too good and would have made our film look less intense than it is and made it look more like the opening sequence of a cartoon, as through my research I found out that this form of text movement is often used in cartoons. so the next option was creating the titles. The problem with this however was that our software had many limitations, which meant we were not able to go with through our idea, so we had to go with the next best thing which looked good. In the beginning we were very upset about this and felt as if the film was a disaster however through feedback we were told that this worked and that our opening title created a sense of mystery, and the theme of romance could be attached to it.

These are all the ways in which feedback has been, helpful and effective during the construction of our film

what are the red strings of fate?

The Red String of Fate is a popular myth in both Chinese and Japanese culture.

. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of men and women who are destined to be soul mates and will one day marry each other. According to Chinese legend, the deity in charge of "the red thread" is believed to be Yue Xia Lao, the old lunar matchmaker god who is also in charge of marriages.
The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmates or a twin flame.
One story based apon the string of fate.
one story featuring the red string of fate involves a young boy. Walking home one night, a young boy sees an old man standing beneath the moonlight (Yue Xia Lao). The man explains to the boy that he is attached to his destined wife by a red thread. Yue Xia Lao shows the boy the young girl who is destined to be his wife. Being young and having no interest in having a wife, the young boy picks up a rock and throws it at the girl, running away. Many years later, when the boy has grown into a young man, his parents arrange a wedding for him. On the night of his wedding, his wife waits for him in their bedroom, with the traditional veil covering her face. Raising it, the man is delighted to find that his wife is one of the great beauties of his village. However, she wears an adornment on her eyebrow. He asks her why she wears it and she responds that when she was a young girl, a boy threw a rock at her that struck her, leaving a scar on her eyebrow. She self consciously wears the adornment to cover it up. The woman is, in fact, the same young girl connected to the man by the red thread shown to him by Yue Xia Lao back in his childhood.

She is represented as a master of manipulation, of peers and especially the opposite sex, who most of the time she has wrapped around her finger. Basically your typical kind of ‘bithchy’ character.
